Tree Babalade Taking Root on the OL

By Wee Bee Cocky

When young athletes embark on their college football journeys, they often face an initial period of adjustment, adapting to the higher intensity, speed, and complexity of the game. But for one South Carolina freshman, offensive lineman Oluwatobi “Tree” Babalade, this transition appears to be unfolding with remarkable ease and confidence. In just a few short weeks, Babalade has gone from a newcomer to a prominent figure on the Gamecocks’ offensive line, showcasing his talent and determination.

As with many rising stars in college football, Tree’s journey to this point has been marked by a mixture of persistence, adaptability, and the unwavering support of his teammates and coaches. When asked about his sudden rise to a starting position, Tree humbly explained that his coaches saw his potential during practice and believed he was ready to take on a more prominent role. His reaction? “Put me in, coach.”

What’s most impressive about Tree’s early success is his willingness to learn and grow. He readily acknowledges that he’s a freshman and continues to seek guidance from older players on the team. It’s this humility and desire to improve that sets him on a promising trajectory.

The young lineman, hailing from the DMV area, has faced off against some of the best defensive linemen in practice. Players like Boogie Tonk and TJ have undoubtedly played a role in his development. Tree recalls an early practice where he realized the physicality and intensity of SEC-level play when he was hit hard and quickly learned that there was no room for taking it easy.

The transition to college football is challenging, especially in the SEC, known for its fierce competition. However, Tree’s composure and adaptability have allowed him to settle in and make an impact. Playing in front of packed stadiums and vocal SEC crowds might overwhelm some freshmen, but for Tree, it was a moment he’ll never forget. He commented on the intensity of the fans, saying, “I can’t be hitting nothing; my fans are going crazy.”

A key factor in Tree’s smooth transition has been the mentorship of veteran players like Gargiulo, Rashawn Lee, and others. Their experience and leadership have provided invaluable guidance to the young lineman as he navigates the complex world of SEC football.

Tree’s journey to South Carolina wasn’t straightforward, and he initially had reservations about joining the Gamecocks. However, after discussions with Coach Bema, Coach Lonnie, and Coach Greg, he felt the familial atmosphere and found himself drawn to the program. And now, just a few weeks into the season, Tree is not only part of the Gamecocks family but a crucial component of their offensive line.

As South Carolina looks to establish a formidable running game, Tree and his fellow linemen are working hard to make that a reality. While the Georgia game presented challenges, Tree remains focused on improving and adapting to different defensive schemes, like the 3-3-5 formation employed by Mississippi State, their next opponent.

Tree’s name, Oluwatobi, means “God is worthy to be served,” and he is certainly living up to the significance of his name. His early success and the promise he brings to the South Carolina Gamecocks are testaments to his dedication and unwavering work ethic. With each passing game, Tree Babalade continues to grow and evolve, earning his place as a rising star in college football. South Carolina fans can’t wait to see how high this young lineman can climb in the world of SEC football.
